Forums removed

Today, I removed the phpBB forums that I had up – it was terribly underused.  I also discovered that I had somewhere around 150 users, most of which were spambots that managed to create posts about various inappropriate topics.

If there is a need for a forum in the future, I’ll do a better job of blocking that content – I just don’t see the need at the moment.  Any conversations can take place on the topics posted here, or feel free to contact me.

ConvergeSouth 2006

I am making the move to attend my first blogger conference.  On October 14, 2006, I’ll drive over to Greensboro, NC to attend ConvergeSouth 2006.  I registered for the conference because I found out that Robert Scoble will be giving a talk.  Robert and his wife, Maryam have just prepared their talk titled 10 Ways to a Killer Blog.  I think it’ll be interesting!  It seems most of the blogger-type conferences happen in the Silicon Valley area — so, it’s a surprise to see one near Raleigh.

Update:  I was unable to attend this year’s conference – we’re reaching the end of a product cycle at work, and I was tied up.  After reading this and this, it seems like everyone had a great time though…

Akismet revisited

Back in May, I made a post called “Akismet is fantastic!”  That was back when Akismet had blocked a mere 1,062 spam filled comments.  Today, I’m reaching the 14,000 mark.  I post about this today, because yesterday Akismet introduced a bug in their statistics update that caused over 150 of them to not be filtered for me.  My inbox was full — luckily 1) WordPress makes it incredibly easy to mark these as spam and move on and 2) They fixed the bug very quickly.  Again, I never realize how wonderful it is until I’m without it for a few hours…  I have added the Akismet spam counter on the bottom of the right column for fun.

Quick blog redesign

Today, I installed the new Internet Explorer 7 RC1 build and quickly realized how ugly the site looked in IE7. I had used the Benevolence theme with nightlys from the WordPress CVS for quite some time — and discovered it was completely not XHTML 1.0 Strict compliant. So, I’ve decided to move up to WordPress with K2. I’ll hopefully have some time tonight to put some of the content and touches back. Please bear with me — this will be under some construction for the next few days…

Akismet is fantastic!

A few months ago, I began to receive spam comments here on my blog. At first, it was only one or two..but that quickly became ten or so per day. I decided to activate the built-in Akismet plugin for WordPress, and it turns out to have been one of the best decisions I’ve made. This is the message I got when I logged in today:

Akismet has protected your site from 1,062 spam comments.

I highly recommend this plugin to anyone on WordPress!

Blog Direction

I arrived to work on Thursday to find that I had an internal email from someone in NetApp Worldwide Integrated Marketing regarding my blog. I am amazed; my little blog was found. So, that brings me to my point…I need to find a direction with this blog. I think I’m going to make it a little more ‘tech’ centric. I know that’s where I originally intended it to go, and most of you expected that…so that’s what I’m going to do. In our discussion, I realized that there aren’t many NetApp bloggers. I found that a quick Google search unveiled a few customers (or prospects) requesting more NetApp engineer bloggers. So, I’d like to hear some comments.

Forums Online

This is for those of you who visit my site regularly.  I’ve noticed a few instances of people posting off-topic replies to blog entries…and while this is okay, it is inefficient for discussions.  Therefore, I’ve put up a forum for you all to post random things on.  You can use it to ask questions, make comments, tell us your life story, etc.  You can reach it at www.jbctech.com/forum.  I had this up before, and pulled it down when I redesigned the site, but I do think it is important..if you all use it.  If you want any categories/forums added, just let me know in the forums, and I’d be happy to add it.  So, I encourage you all to create a quick account on there and make a quick post.  Even if it’s just to say “Hi, I read your blog.”
