VMware server free?

I work in a group here at NetApp which will soon be responsible for the development of the VMware SAN Host Attach Kit. In related news today for VMware, the EMC subsidiary is expected to announce next week that VMware GSX will be free. Currently, the software runs $1,400 for a dual-processor server. Here’s part of the CNET News.com article:

VMware, an EMC subsidiary whose software lets multiple operating systems run on the same computer, is expected to announce next week that it will begin giving away one of its key products for free, CNET News.com has learned.

The company sells three core products, VMware Workstation, GSX Server and ESX Server, but competition is on the horizon in a market VMware once had to itself. On Monday, however, the company is expected to announce it will give away GSX for free, sources familiar with the plan said.

GSX runs on a “host” Windows or Linux operating system and then lets “guest” operating systems run atop it in compartments called virtual machines. The higher-end ESX product, in contrast, needs no host and runs below the operating system layer.

30 Boxes

One of the things I’ve been looking for is a great, simple calendaring tool that I can integrate into the blog for events, activities, travel, etc. Well, I’ve been searching for months — I guess what I’m looking for is something simple that works like Flickr, but with events. I just haven’t found it…but today, on Robert Scoble‘s blog, he says he received an early copy of 30 Boxes and says things such as “wow” and “beautiful.”

Could this be what I’m looking for? I won’t know until Sunday when they launch the Public Beta. Thomas Hawk has a lot more in a blog entry called “30 Boxes, Best… Calender… EVER!” Apparently 30 Boxes has great search capabilities and you’re able to share your calendar with friends by e-mail address. But, you’re not just restricted to all or nothing – you can even restrict what the people can see by using tags. There is a quote on the page saying “30 Boxes will be to calendars what GMail was to Email.” I can’t wait to try this out…

New Apple Lawsuit

Someone sent me this article yesterday, and I must say that it doesn’t surprise me.  Today, people seem to sue companies for pretty much anything — some people will do anything for money…

New York (February 2, 2006)–Apple is under fire for its popular iPod music player, as the first known–and perhaps inevitable–hearing loss lawsuit has been filed against it. A complaint was filed Tuesday at U.S. District Court in San Jose, CA. John Patterson, a Louisiana man, is suing, asking for unspecified damages and upgrades that will make the players safer.

Of note to the pro audio and touring industries, the complaint also places blame on ear buds, noting that they can cause hearing loss as they “do not dilute the sound entering the ear and are closer to the ear canal than other sound sources,” according to the Associated Press.

Interestingly, the suit does not note whether Patterson suffered hearing loss from an iPod which he purchased last year. The complaint alleges that iPods are “inherently defective in design and are not sufficiently adorned with adequate warnings regarding the likelihood of hearing loss.”
